New Britain’s Local Prevention Council works to promote wellness through education,
advocacy, collaboration and implementing strategies to ensure all youth are
prepared to be positive contributing community members.

This month, it's Lights On Afterschool

Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families, and communities. The Afterschool Alliance organizes Lights On Afterschool to draw attention to the many ways afterschool programs support students. This month, New Britain Youth Prevention is working with Axim Design to run a month-long social media campaign focusing on the testimonies of afterschool program providers and participants. Here, you can see all of the content we've posted so far to highlight the wide variety of programs available to students in New Britain!

Youth Leadership Spotlight

Alex

My name is Alex and I'm an 8th grader at Pulaski Middle School. I have a brother, sister, oh yeah - and a goldfish. Basketball is my favorite sport, but I also really like football and golf. Besides sports, I enjoy video games, snapchat, and after school programs. When I get older, I am going to have a job related to sports. I expect to be an even better leader in the future than I am today. I would like to tell my peers to stay inspired!

Daniel

Hello! My name is Daniel and I’m a freshman at New Britain High. When I’m not participating in the Youth Leadership Group, I really enjoy playing music and learning new instruments. I’d like to go to college to learn how to make music my career, as a choir director. One thing I’d like to tell my peers is to celebrate your uniqueness and accept others for theirs!

Malia

Hi! My name is Malia and I’m a student at HALS Academy. I play basketball and softball, and I’ve also been learning to play piano for about a year now. When I’m not practicing sports or music, I like to watch Youtube and play with my pets, a dog and a fish. I’m really proud to be a member of the Youth Leadership Group because we’re spreading awareness about Youth Prevention, and helping my peers to live happier and healthier lives!
